The Board of Directors of Cakes for Cause is pleased to announce that proceeds from the 4^th Annual Cupcake Run: the Sweetest Race in Town (to be held on April 14th) will be distributed to the Frederick County Chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). The very popular 5K run will highlight, as in previous years, the needs of vulnerable youth in the Frederick community. BBBS is dedicated to matching trained volunteer mentors with young people in long term, supportive relationships in order to make a positive difference in their lives. Over its history, the program has been able to document positive shifts in school performance as the result of these amazing relationships.

“We know from our own experience that a strong, day to day commitment to youth can change the course of their lives.” states CFC spokesperson, Elin Ross “We also know that we wanted the proceeds from the Cupcake Run to go to an organization with a mission and vision closely tied to our own.” Over the past three years, the race has brought as many as 850 runners and over 1,000 participants from as far away as England to support CFC apprentices who have gained job skills and vocational support by working in the organization’s social enterprise, Moxie Bakery & Café. “We are undergoing a challenging transition.” says Ross “But we didn’t want to lose the momentum that is generated by this race each year so we decided to use the proceeds to continue to make a difference for kids in the community.”

The race will also celebrate the 2013 theme of Frederick Reads: Food for Thought and the Frederick Reads featured author, Will Allen (“The Good Food Revolution”).

Making Magic with Gingerbread

Enjoy two memorable and entertaining evenings when Chef Mark Ramsdell demonstrates the techniques and possibilities of gingerbread on November 16 and 28. Chef Mark has been the creator of renowned gingerbread replicas of Mount Vernon for the last 10 years, and is ready to share his craft, tricks of the trade, and some very special anecdotes as he creates a gingerbread replica of a Frederick landmark right before your eyes. Chef Mark formerly was the Director and Head Instructor for L’Academie de Cuisine’s Professional Pastry Arts Program. Previously, he studied under Roland Mesnier, Executive Pastry Chef at the White House and then worked with him at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. What better way is there to learn how to make a gingerbread house this holiday than from one of the most prestigious chefs today? Did we mention that it’s just in time to prepare you for the Scents and Sweets Holiday Competition? Each individual class is $25 or attend both for $45. Space is limited! Three years ago, Moxie Bakery & Cafe opened its doors for the first time, bringing excellent coffee, a lively environment, and French pastries to North Market Street. In the process, Moxie also brought hope and opportunity to some of our community’s most vulnerable young people. Three years and 56,007 cups of coffee later, Moxie is still here. Congratulations, Moxie, on staying the course!

They’re here, the official race times for the Second Annual Cakes for Cause Cupcake Run: The Sweetest Race In Town. We had a GREAT time and hope you did as well. We’ve been informed that the race is officially too large to use manual tickets next year so it’s off to the microchip store for the race bibs. Remember, if you didn’t pick up your cupcake on race day. you may use your coupon at Moxie Bakery & Cafe until the end of the month!

April 8, 2010 – Only TWO more days until the Sweetest Race in Town! Yes folks, it’s almost upon us…the 5K cupcake run (with a cupcake at the end of the race). Registration on Sunday April 10th starts at 7:00 am, the race starts at 8:30, and you can even join us for brunch at Moxie Bakery & Cafe at 11:30. Early bird packet pick up will be at the Bernard W. Brown Community Center (629 North Market Street) on Saturday between 7:30 and 9:30. Haven’t registered yet?…you still can at early bird pick up or on race day (the weather is supposed to be BEAUTIFUL!) Don’t forget to bring a camera and some spare change…in addition to one raffle ticket with each entry, we will be selling additional tickets for some great swag, plus there will be several grownups dressed like cupcakes and you don’t want to miss your photo op!

February 22, 2011 – Cakes for Cause is proud to announce that we have been offered a challenge grant for the next 45 days. For every dollar we raise, our challenger will match it dollar for dollar. We’ve set a lofty goal for ourselves and are going to try to raise $50,000 that will help support our program in 2011. Each youth who participates in our apprenticeship program costs approximately $7,000-$9,000, which covers their stipends, their insurance, uniforms, equipment and supplies for the six months they participate in the program. We’d like you to help us reach our goal…so whether it’s $10 or $500, your gift is doubled in the month of March!
